Work Packages
The project activities are managed in so-called Work Packages (WPs). SOB4ES is set up around six such WPs. Different partners take the lead on achieving different tasks within a particular WP while ensuring close collaboration with other institutions and across the different WPs.

Work Package 1
- represents the technically innovative part of INERRANT regarding materials and eco-friendly processes development, needed to achieve safer and better performing anode, cathode, electrolyte and separator for Gen 3 LIBs. More precisely, it will focus on FLTG/Si-based nanohybrids prepared by simultaneous laser-assisted transformation of two precursors, turbostratic graphite EGC anode produced by green precursors and electrochemical upcycling of CO2, Laser-assisted engineering of porosity/morphology of carbonaceous electrodes to facilitate electrolyte diffusion and the fabrication of hybrid anodes to avoid the low voltage platform (charging/discharging) of the purely graphitic anode to alleviate safety concerns due to Li plating.
Work Package 2
- consists of the materials and eco-friendly processes development for advanced Li-ion batteries with enhanced safety behavior, through Scalable and sustainable processes for the synthesis of high performance Nirich and polyanionic LMFP cathode active materials with tunable morphologies for robust and effective CEI.
Work Package 3
- works on the Technology optimization of single, core-shell, and mixed-layered fibers with stimuli-tunable response, the functionalization of fibers with additives and definition of upscaling parameters and industrial upscaling of the separator technologies and its demonstration.
Work Package 4
- focuses on the advances of novel LIB components: a two-step upscaling approach is followed; first, with small-scale pouch cells to evaluate the cell manufacturing process and scalability of materials, and second, by technology demonstration at large-scale cells compatible with electromobility applications.
Work Package 5
- stands as a testament to the INERRANT’s commitment to sustainability. It consolidates all necessary tools for a robust LCA, LCC, S-LCA as also a novel recyclability processes, ensuring that these processes are in perfect alignment with the project’s breakthrough technologies. It will delineate the roadmap to realize the ambitious vision to achieve project objectives for safe and sustainable by design material development for Gen 3 LIBs.
Work Package 6
- deals with extensive LIB cell safety testing and analysis applying international testing standards (e.g. EUCAR, IEC, UN). It employs validated protocols to not just expedite market adoption but to ensure that the products stand up to the highest safety and performance standards, with a safety benchmark set ambitiously at (at least) the Hazard Level of 3.
Work Package 7
- is the project’s outreach arm, devising comprehensive dissemination activities. It ensures that the INERRANT’s innovations are not just confined to labs and the scientific community but reach diverse stakeholders, from industry experts to the general public.
Work Package 8
- provides efficient project management, ensuring that every milestone is met with precision and excellence. It fosters a culture of collaboration, ensuring that every partner is aligned with the project’s vision and adheres to Open Science principles.
